South Coast Children’s Services appreciates the dedication and hard work that our volunteers put into our organization. Many of our Board of Directors have been on the Board for years, showing how much they love what they do. Adults as well as youth volunteers help make SCCS a valuable resource in our community.

Youth Volunteers

One of our Core Values at SCCS is Leadership. We hold a high level of respect for individuals of all ages. We provide volunteer opportunities where youth acquire leadership experience and practice leadership skills. Youth are involved in every level of the governance, administration, and operations of SCCS including developing and implementing their own program ideas. These are some of the areas in which we have volunteers.

Soccer and Volleyball Camp: Teens work together to create a plan for the week and decide how they will teach the younger youth new skills. In doing this, they become mentors to the younger youth, they learn how to lead groups, how to communicate effectively, and how to make sure their actions accomplish their goals.

Fun in Spanish: This program consists of about 10 youth; of these 10, two are a year older than the rest. They are the “maestritos” or “little teachers”. Each Thursday they have an assignment in which they take a leadership role and teach the group something new. They may lead a game, an exercise, or a song. It’s a great experience for the youth, as they are learning to be young leaders at only seven years old.

SCCS Pescadero Arts and Fun Festival, Fashion Show: All the youth who are involved in the planning of the fashion show are volunteers. Youth involved in this planning learn how to plan a large event, how to manage their time, how to direct people, and how to successfully run a great show. They are leaders from the moment they choose to be part of this event. From choosing the music to the theme of the show, they are the ones who decide what type of show to put on. The youth emcees also take on a leadership position. They create and are responsible for the skit during the show, making sure to keep it appropriate for all family members.
